Convert JPG to PNG

Useful when the image is going into an editing workflow that will re-save it repeatedly.

Options

All processing runs in your browser. No file leaves this device.

It is worth being clear about what this conversion does and does not do. It does not restore quality. The information a JPEG discarded during compression is gone, and no format can bring it back — converting to PNG preserves exactly what is there now, artifacts included.

What it does is stop further loss. Every time a JPEG is opened, edited and saved again, it is re-compressed, and the artifacts compound. If a file is going through several rounds of editing, converting to PNG first means the intermediate saves cost nothing in quality. Export back to JPG at the end.

The other reason is compatibility with workflows that require an alpha channel. A JPG has no transparency, but once it is a PNG you can erase to transparent, and that will be preserved on save.

Expect the files to grow considerably — often five to fifteen times. PNG stores every pixel exactly, and photographic content gives its compressor very little to work with.

Common questions

Does converting to PNG improve the image quality?
No. Compression loss is not reversible. PNG preserves the pixels as they currently are, artifacts and all. The benefit is that no further loss is added by subsequent saves.
Why did my file get so much bigger?
PNG is lossless and photographic content compresses poorly without discarding information. Five to fifteen times the original size is normal. If size matters, stay with JPG or use WebP.
Are the files uploaded?
No. Decoding, resampling and encoding all run inside this page. Nothing is transmitted, and there is no server that could keep a copy. Watch the Network tab in your devtools during a conversion if you want to confirm it.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes — drop in as many as you like and they are processed in parallel across your CPU cores. A single file downloads directly; multiple files come back as a ZIP. In Chrome and Edge you can also write them straight into a folder you pick.

This converter is part of a full editing pipeline — tone, colour, lens correction and batch export all run the same way, without uploading.
