Taking plain luminance renders reds and greens as near-identical greys, and a subject separated from its background by colour alone collapses into a flat tone. Adjustable weights are exactly what a yellow or red filter did on black and white film: darkening the sky to make clouds stand out, or lightening skin.
The mix is computed in linear light, so the weights behave like actual light contributions rather than arbitrary slider values.
